Book Covers & Hype

Do they get you to read the book or does the book jacket draw you to the story??

What about when a Book get hype and doesn't live up it ??

I have seen some books that all got rave reviews around on other book bloggers , but for me they didn't live up to the hype. There are some books that have lived up to the hype and glad that I had read them.

For example I kept seeing all these quotes from Twilight saga--and finally read the series and loved it. It brought me back to reading young adult novels.

I bought the Hollow and won Numbers and to me --those didn't live up the hype with other book bloggers reviews.

Covers do bring me look at the book and also the blurb--but the storyline keeps me sharing the book with my friends.

Curious on your thoughts on both of these topics

  1. Jackets get me to pick it up but not necessarily read it.
    Great question!

  2. I do love covers but it may be what's written on them or reviews that get me to read the book. I've also read books that reviewers loved and I just didn't for some reason. That's a bummer. ;)

  3. A good cover + a great premise can make me at least start a book! The content has to be good for me to continue.

  4. Covers are attention grabbers.... Those covers at least get you to pick up the book, read the back, the insert and maybe the first chapter... whatever ones method is for the "read or not to read". I use to be very guilty of it, basically letting the cover be the deciding factor. Not anymore.

I try to not let one bad (or a bunch of bad reviews), keep me from reading the book in question either.

  5. I'll fall in love with a good cover, and I do confess that appearance is part of the whole pre-release hype for me, but plenty of awesomely-covered books have been duds for me. It feels like such a waste! :-) Like an excellent trailer for a so-so movie.

  6. I agree with Lenore's comment. Honestly, a good cover does a lot for me. It draws my attention in and makes me curious about the content inside the book. However, I've read great books with lousy covers and poorly written books with fantastic covers. I guess my preference is the complete package. A great story with a nice cover. :P

  7. A great cover definitely gets my attention but I don't buy it unless the story sounds interesting.

  8. It's been a while since I've been to a bookstore. I've gotten caught up in online buying these days. When I did go to the book stores, the covers did catch my attention. Dinky cover = no touchie. Sexy cover = fondle. Then I'd flip to the back and check out the blurb. If the blurb caught my interest, up to the check out counter we would go. Really it was a game of chance.

Since I've gotten on twitter, my buying habits have changed. Now I frequent blogs to find out which books are hot. Some of the best books I've read this year have covers I'd never have put my hands on at the book store (Mind Games by Carolyn Crane, The Hunger Games and Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins, Comfort Food by Kitty Thomas). I've also won quite a few books this year which has introduced me to a host of genres new to me. I read my first Urban Fantasy book this year and discovered the world of Young Adult.

Being one who typically sticks with Paranormal Romance, I'd never have found those genres on my own.

  9. I definitely pick up a book because of a great cover. If it's a hideous cover and I want to read it anyway, I have to tape a piece of paper over the existing cover so I don't picture the people inside looking that way!!!! Weird and quirky, I know but if a hero isn't appealing to me at all, that can definitely ruin a book for me:)

  10. I do enjoy good covers (thinking of JR Ward's Lover Mine, as an example!) but I've never picked up a rom book b/c of the cover. My choices all come by word of mouth from friends, bloggers and authors OR the summary/blurb.

I do, however, get frustrated when a book I like has a cover that doesn't accurately portray the book.

  12. I have to admit, I am a sucker for a catchy cover, but the book needs to be more than just the cover to hook me. I will admit, I have passed up good books before because the cover turned me off, until someone said, you must read this book. Covers are important to me, but they are not everything.

As for hype, I have had that experience too. As you know from my review of Linger, I wasn't as fond of it as so many others. Hype will get me to pick up a book, but I don't always like what I see. Thanks for the tip about the Hollow. I started it, but haven't got far. I will probably go back to it later, but right now I have to focus on my committee books. Numbers wasn't a favorite of mine either.
