MTV--What Happened ??

I remember when we first got cable TV and we were finally able to watch music video in the house. I can even remember that tag line: I want my MTV I want my MTV

I think I would be considered a Generation X or Y depending on my age group..don't remember the cut off to determine the which one it was...

I remember the how big the productions for a music video like Michael Jackson's Thriller and loved that the VJ's were normal people and got to see new bands introduced.

I found new artists like Tori Amos, Duran Duran, The Cure, B-52's , and Sting, etc.. I remember going to slumber parties and having this in the background while we were chatting or seeing all the different types of music varieties that I got introduced to like Rap, Heavy Metal and many more.

I was also sad when VJ's left like Martha Quinn , because I liked her and related to her. I loved when you started doing Movie & Music awards--and then when the statues meant something. I think watching those shows were great conversations I remember having while I was in High School.

I totally get that you had to grow and mature along with your audience. I remember when you started doing Real World and now you are season 20.

I totally understand that you need shows to keep the audience watching your channel

I admit I watched the Soriety Life in Davis, CA and couple Road Rallies, but now I don't watch your channel. I would love to see it brought back to more video's.

I know that for 1 hour : Total Request Live with Carson Daly --that had music video's and stars

I know that I'm not watching your shows right now..much more adult content and I have kids. I admit I haven't seen Jersey Shore and I don't care about snooki. She reminds me of Trish from Real World: Vegas.

Okay do you watch MTV or VH1 ? Do you miss the music video's or do you love the shows ? Do you have a favorite VJ or show ?? Whats your favorite music video ??? Do you still watch or has MTV lost the Generation X or Y's to another channel.

Thanks to Karen, Rachel , and Jaime, and Day  for talking about this on twitter and getting wanting to talk about this because I needed a writing prompt.

  1. I watched 16 and Pregnant (Or something like that) a few months ago because everyone was talking about, but I've been disappointed in MTV for years. You used to be able to watch MTV2 for videos, but the last time I looked at that channel it was a lot of shows too.

I have really fond memories of watching MTV before high school. I'd get up, shower and eat breakfast and watch videos.

  2. I abandoned MTV awhile ago. I switched to VH1 because of the lack of programs. And now I don't watch either of them.
I miss music videos - but even if they brought them back, I wouldn't watch. I've seen the way artists portray themselves these days and I don't need to be watching legalized porn - or heaven forbid my kids flip to that channel.
I think we've entered into that era that most folks do - "remember when...?"
    And so the cycle continues.

  4. I think I'm Gen X too. Class of 96 HS. 1988, Cindi Lauper, Madonna. Then 1989 Head Bangers Ball, Poison, Pantera, Metallica, Guns N Roses, than even later, to the grunge movement...and then The Real World. I get it, they invented Reality TV. Something to be proud of, but now you can't even see music videos on VH1. What is that?

    I watch the VMAs - and really do try to tune into MTV every now and again. Gotta stay hip, gotta stay up with teenagers and what is fueling them because of the design work I do. But... Snookie and the Jersey Shore crew makes me sad just people of the idiocy of the entire thing. People that revel in their brainlessness just sets me wrong. I believe that MTV might be the first station to have the "OW MY BALLS" show {Idiocracy}

I don't think I'll let my daughter watch MTV. I probably shouldn't have been watching HBB at 13 though, LOL.

  5. I watch videos in the morning. They still have them on VH1 but there really isn't much variety.
the industry keeps complaining about the decline of record sales but they don't really promote anyone anymore. How are we supposed to find out about new artist if the music channels don't play music?
