Blog Confession - Great Books

Have you ever loved a book that you know is not a great literary gem? Maybe it's filled with spelling errors, tired cliches, cheestastic  but you loved it anyway. I have read some that . I enjoy them , and some of them are cheesy, sappy , and total formula based but once in a while I need some light reading. I admit I love a good romance novel. I grew up reading Flowers in the attic, and Sweet Valley High, and Jackie Collins.

How do you handle that as a blogger who is used to critical thinking and analysis? Do you pretend you never read the book - never to be reviewed or added to your Goodreads shelf :-)? Well I find I need to read review books and non review books. I don't always like taking notes and being critical of the book. I want to enjoy the book too whether its good or bad. I do add most of the books I read to the goodreads shelf , but there are times I forget to add the book to it.
Do you write a review but maybe apologize and make excuses as to why you enjoyed it or are you bold and proud of any book you enjoyed? No I write my review and proud of it, but I do like to see if my friends enjoyed the book or disliked it as much as I did. I did a review for Biting Cold, and I mention that I thought the author was trying to atone for the past two books, and the fan reaction. I too am like her main Character and being at a crossroad with continuing on with the series. This series made it okay , but as a fan ..its been 6 books , and I want something from the series. I am also proud that I haven't read 50 Shades nor do I want to read it.

Conversely - have you read a classic, that is considered a literary gem but you just didn't get it? Are you embarrassed to admit that or do you review it anyway? I finally read Jane and loved it. I also have some other classics that I need to get to and read. I read also Wuthing Heights too, and enjoyed it. No I am not embarrassed to admit that I enjoyed it. I bought Jude to read . I think reading classics open the door to the past , and how they lived their lives. I am a Jane Austen Fan and those books are classics for a reason. I love meeting all those characters like Mr. Darcy, Wentworth , and Elizabeth.

I admit I need to read more classics and I do have more classics at home to read, but as the saying goes, so many books so little time.

Thanks Karen and Pam for this topic

  1. I'm definitely reading for fun more now. In fact I haven't reviewed at least %50 of the books I've read recently.

  2. I think Fifty Shades of Grey fits into your first category, the first one was great in my opinion. I did enjoy the trilogy as a whole though.

I haven't read many classics but the ones I have really enjoyed, And Then There Were None, Rebecca and To Kill a Mockingbird I enjoyed but not as much as 'everyone' else.

  3. Good point about finding time to read for pleasure. I need to be better about that!

I also remember secretly reading Flowers In the Attic. And I've read some of those 80s beach books, like Jackie Collins, Judith Krantz, Sidney Sheldon, Danielle Steele, etc. Some of those were definitely cheesetastic, but so fun! Like with food, I think balance is important in reading. You need some vegetables, but also some M&Ms!

  4. I devoured the Flowers series...then got sick of them. I also read a lot of Jackie Collins. I really didn't enjoy And Then There Were None, but I loved To Kill a Mockingbird (I read it in Jr. High). I still want to read Rebecca.
