The Turning --Book Review

Mary Richards is a normal sixteen-year-old girl living in Manhattan. Well, almost normal. She goes to private school on the Upper East Side, having been saved from a life of squalor by an adoptive family. But she’s also slowly transforming into a cat.
Struggling to hide her physical metamorphosis, Mary discovers that she isn’t alone. A whole race of cat people prowls the streets of Manhattan at night, including Mary’s long-time crush, Nick.

Aside from heightened feline senses, hanging out with Nick is the best thing about discovering her inner kitty. But Mary’s transformation is special and could decide the outcome of a citywide turf war. She must decide whether to embrace her powerful feline side and become a pack leader or go back to being a normal teenage girl. Can she land on her feet or will curiosity be her downfall? (good reads.com)

Mary leads a charmed life in New York city. She was adopted along with her sister Octavia , and their mom is mystery writer. They go to this private school and have some good friends who are twins.

Mary realizes that she is acting more different and craving milk and attracted to Nick , who is her crush and happens to be just like her. Ling Ling is her Nemesis and they don't get along because they both like Nick. Nick also happens to be able to turn into a cat along with the deli store boy ( Yoon). I did love that this book was full multicultural characters. This book has a lot of references on TV or computers like Twilight or Twitter.

I did think that there was an interesting comparison of US vs. Them  or Strays vs domesticated cats.

But I didn't understand at all -- why she or some other kids were able to turn into cats. I didn't think that there was enough information for me to be satisfied. This bugged me a lot ...I was hoping to get answers and I wasn't getting answers to even the littlest question I did have. For example-- why was she able to turn into a cat ?  Why can they only change for a couple years ? Is it through the parents or something else  or its being Greek ? Why didn't the grandparents translate more of the book to the kids ??

There was some explanation with a Greek Book , and why the color Orange to be the Ruler over the cats but it left me wanting to know what was in the book and why ...

I found the scene where she turned into a Cat to very different with Nick and Yoon --wasn't sexual but it they cats seemed very catlike with their emotions.  It was nice to have her think like a cat and think name blah blah ...name . This was a fast read , and want to see what happens with all the characters like Ben, Octavia, and Ling Ling and Nick.

My daughter can read this book but we will be discussing it.
