The Night is not safe for mortals. Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows --her best friend is half vampire Cat Crawfield-- and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family's past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness-- and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who lusts for the taste of her.
He is Spade, a powerful , mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty bound to protect this endangered , alluring human--even if it means destroying his own kind. ( Back of the book)
This is my first time reading this author and seeing her vampire world. This is an adult book. It was nice to see that she did stick the Vampire Canon in some ways.
These are side characters who get their own book/romance but they are still part of the Gang of Cat/Bones. I haven't read any of the Cat / Bones series at all. But I have heard many rumblings online about a Chapter 32 in the first book.
Denise is a human and has lost many family members to strange other world happenings
Spade is a english vampire , and lost his love : both are friends of Cat/Bones
2 POV of Shade and Denise
Denise calls Spade because she doesn't want her friends to help her to deal with a demon. She also suffers from PTSD and this is brought up alot because she thinks the Vampire world is dangerous. They have known each other for 1 year , because of a previous fight with something otherworldly. Glad to know the history between the characters.
Spade for Denise gives up a house, boat, coat , 2 shirts . Denise donates some blood to Spade so that he can feed.
There were at times Shade and Denise reminded me of Dave & Maddie from Moonlighting just by their witty comments. I loved it when they got together and could feel the tension between the couple because they were both attracted to each , but fighting their feelings for each other. Denise so didn't want to be apart of the world and she could whine too much at times.
I didn't like how this was a Denise/Spade book but then other characters come back to help in the fight. I do understand that they are friends of the Cat/Bones and more people helping the situation will solve the problem. For example and using a Buffy reference-- a eposide thats all Willow or Cordy and their problems ...and then all of a sudden Buffy/ Spike/ Angel all come help solve the problem but when the book started as a Willow or Cordy. Its like the whole Gang is back together and the eposide that was all about Willow or Cordy is just a side story to the Buffy/Spike/Angel ...It was like the author couldn't make up her mind on who the book was about.
Thats leads to another problem because the author couldn't decide who the book was about , I cared a little about the Denise/Spade..and I would love to meet Spade should he become real..but It did lead me wanting to hear more about Cat/Bones and wondering if there was going to be another book in the Denise/Spade story

ReplyDeleteI found you through the Book Blogger Hop and am now happy to be a follower.
A ha, inner book marketing. Hence, you feel if you have not read Cat/Bones you just must after reading this one. And when you read Cat/Bones you want to read about them more cause ya just love them, soooo you just love that they showed up in FDOC...its like a book selling black hole of buy ups.
ReplyDeleteIm a huge fan of the Night Huntress series so I'm familiar with the characters but I have read several reviews that agree with you on the whole Buffy analogy without the Buffy references. Nice review :)
ReplyDeleteOh and you should really give Cat and Bones a good reading chance. They make for some great reading.
Great honest review! I just finished this one up today and have to say that I LOVED it!! It is actually a first full on vampire/undead novel that I have read (other than Twilight, of course) and am planning on going back and read the first in the Night Huntress series to learn more about Cat. This seems to be one of those books that is either loved or hated. My review will be posting soon.
