Wither Book Review
Rhine got kidnapped and sold into a polygamous marriage. She doesn't know where her brother Rowan is , and adjusting to life in Florida being married. In this era , a man can live to 25 years old, and for women its 20.
Rhine is one of 3 girls married to Linden. There is Jenna and Cecily who are also married to Linden. The girls all have rooms on one floor , and near Rose who is Linden wife who is dying. Rose and Rhine become friends before she passes.
Linden is in a fog since Rose died . Housemaster Vaughn is really the man in charge of the mansion. He is trying to save the girls so they don't die. He is also Linden's father, but at times he doesn't act like a father. He is the housemaster.
While living in the mansion, Rhine becomes friends with Gabriel who is a servant there in the house. They are both attracted to each other but don't act on it since she is married to Linden. Their relationship slowly grows over time, and he sends her sweets at times. Rhine slowly makes friends with the other sister wives Jenna & Cecily. She connects more with Jenna. The girls are all observant in different ways through the story. Cecily has a baby , and Vaughn keeps taking the baby for tests.
Rhine is trying not to forget her brother and trying to remember her life before she became caged in this mansion. She wants her freedom, and will do anything to escape. She feels like a caged bird , but while living in the house she becomes the first wife and gets some more freedom with a key card.
This was an interesting novel that dealt with child trafficking and polygamy. I had a tough time with the polygamy aspect of this book. But then I don't want to share my husband with anyone. There is sex in the book because they need to procreate before they die at such a young age. There is also drinking champagne at parties. I think that there is something else that Vaughn is really doing down below but we will found in the next book.
Best Line: "Real" is dirty word in this place
This book still has me thinking about being caged. They are caged in the mansion , and they also have a short life span. Linden doesn't really ask questions to his father about certain things, so he is caged even though he has his freedom. He doesn't go into the water , nor into the basement. Who is really caged because of marriage or life sentence.
I was talking to my DH about this book and trying to explain this world to him and what was happening in the story. He brought up Matrix because that's what it sounded like to him. Overall a Great debut book, and I do want to see what happens with Rhine & Gabriel.
