Luce has had a tough life and living in Alaska with her drunk uncle . She has few friends. She is 14 and has a very tough life. Her mom and dad are both dead. She remembers those moments. Her uncle tries to rape , thinking it was her mom who he was in love with many years ago. She has one other friend, who she hangs out with at school.
She slips off a cliff and turns into a mermaid, which is a surprise to her. She finds a tribe of mermaids and finds them by their singing. She finds that they have rules that they live by: They live by the Timahk. These are the rules that they live by.
1. No Speaking to Humans
2. No touching Humans
3. No human who has heard a mermaid sing can live
The mermaids are known for sinking ships . Luce is learning more about singing and the other mermaids. She is trying to make friends, and not lose herself. More mermaids are added to the mix. The author also addresses with what happens to little kids if something bad should happen to them.
There is drama with more girls added to the mix. Also add a petty, rich girl to the mix and shake it up. There are questions of who should be a Queen. There is some interaction with boats and young men whether the girls fall in love them or even if men can sing too. Luce also finds her voice through her singing and also helps other girls with their singing.

This is part of a trilogy, and interesting concept on how mermaids are formed. I also loved the book cover, and can't wait to see what happens with Luce.
