Well I admit there are some books lately that I haven't loved , but others have loved more and I have thought the same thing. I think that maybe I have become more picky in what I like or don't like. of Course I write my review of the book. Some books that I haven't liked but the blog sphere have been Incarnate, Mephisto Covenant, and Shatter Me, and Fever.
I also take in effect that not all reviewers are the same nor do we all have the same life experiences. But sometimes a book works for me and other times it doesn't . I do think that with reviewing books I have been more critical or I am making sure that I am not spending my time reading that bad book.
I dislike it when the book I have read has a pretty cover , and I try to finish the book. I was asked why I finished a book ...well I had read the ending of it and I wanted to see how it got from A to B. Also some books are like train wrecks , and you hope that it gets better but then they don't. Its frustrating as a reader because you wonder why everyone loves a book that you disliked . I don't like giving bad reviews on books, but sometimes they don't work for me.
Sometimes there are times when you are glad for friends who tell you not to read the bad books. My friend Karen read -- Mephisto Covenant and I told her that she could stop any time. But she wanted to see how bad it was too. Also I remember I was talking with Karen about a Diana Palmer book , and from that I suggested that it could have a drinking game in it too. I don't like to read the bad book, but I will give my reasons why I don't like the book. I also understand that we are all different , so we all take our different experiences into book. Sometimes we love it, and other times we don't. Some times with negative reviews I will check it out.

I haven't been liking a lot of these 'taking blogsphere by storm' books of late. Surprisingly I did like Shatter Me but I did feel that the story was incomplete that I was only getting part of the story. As for review writing..i will write a review it my opinion blog so I write my opinion.

ReplyDeleteIt usually helps me to check out Goodreads; there are always other people who agree with me there even if the majority love the book (I wasn't a huge fan of Shatter Me either; haven't read the other two you mentioned).
ReplyDeleteI had to get over the fact that we can't all like the same books. It's harder when it's a good friend that loves it than just generic reviews on goodreads.
ReplyDeleteI really believe that every book is not for every reader. Sometimes a book just doesn't work for me. If I finish a book, I do review it. If it didn't work for me, I'll try to figure out why. The information might be useful to others.

I agree -- it's nice when a friend saves you from reading a bad book. :) That's why I like bloggers who write fair, balanced and honest reviews --- I can read their thoughts on a book, then then figure out whether it's something I want to try or not.
ReplyDeleteI've become more critical too since reviewing but just because so many books can start to run together. There aren't many new ideas out there but I love it when I run across a new take on an old idea. I think when something is similar or resembles it makes it more difficult for me to like the books.
ReplyDeleteYou make a great point and yes our life experiences really do change the way that we read and review books. My reading habits and the things that do and don't work for me in literature have changed substantially since having children!
ReplyDeleteI've found that some crazy books that everyone loves loves loves I usually end up hating, and vice versa. I guess when it is so different from popular opinion you tend to sit up and notice. So, yeah there are probably a lot of times that I line up with popular opinion...am I making sense? Probably not. Review it no matter what though, sometimes when you disagree with people the respect you more, don't be another one of the herd.
