Blog Confession - Tours /Cover Reveals etc

Does participating in book tours/cover reveals and author guests post drive traffic to your blog? What type of problems have you encountered when hosting them? (please keep it civil - no names or calling specific people out) As a blog follower, are you ever turned off by these kinds of posts? How much publicity is too much?

Okay thinking back..I think the only day I had a good day with the blog and an author was with the Teralynn Child's scavenger Hunt. I have over 600 from that one day. The most I have ever had on a single day.

I don't really do them any more because usually there are multiple blogs doing the reveal , and I see them all in my reader. No I don't get much traffic. No real problems with hosting them. Yes as stated before ...if I see them in my reader then I don't even look at them...ie Marcus Finch tour.

But I did do a tour with an author a couple years back , and I sent my reviews to her because one book was a DNF  because of the ebook formatting. I kept my review up on Goodreads of the book. But even with this book tour I didn't see much of a change.

Another author I read and love her books, she sends out an email with links to her books, and I admit that I do see some hits from that tour.

Overall its a mixed bag when it comes to working with authors and tours.

Thanks Pam and Karen for this topic

  1. I agree that it seems to be a mixed bag, from what I'm reading from bloggers who participate in tours. I haven't done any tours for a long time, and I'm not sure I'm feeling inspired to get back into them. :)

  2. LOL I had to search up the Marcus Finch tour. For some reason I don't remember that tour but remember the book cover.
But anyways I haven't done a tour and most likely will not at the moment. I do, do book cover reveals but most of the time it's of books I'm anticipating and sometimes for an author of mine where I'm a part of a group. But I do love book tours that aren't overwhelming my feed box.

  3. I'm seeing a lot of people say it bogs down their feed/email too see the same post over and over again. I wonder what the sweet spot as far as numbers is? How many is too many bloggers? How many is too few? I'm just glad I'm not the one making those decisions!

    1. Yes that's the question with the tours. It can too much or too little :)

  4. Wow 600 views, that's great! I am a bit surprised b/c I didn't think scavenger hunts and puzzles, etc. would get a lot of traffic. Maybe I think that only b/c I don't like to do them. I remember the Marcus Finch event, but never was curious to figure out what the book was. So that is one case that a book blast didn't work for me.

  5. It seems we all agree about the "I don't even look at them" part, which makes me wonder why so many people still love to participate - also considering the (apparently) not hugely rewarding quality these events have, in terms of hits. Maybe it's because blog tours and cover reveals are a good filler when you suffer from lack-of-posting anxiety LOL.

  6. Only the biggest of the tours give me more hits but that's fine. I usually only participate these days if it's something I like.

The cover reveals got out of control there for awhile. It seems to have calmed down some.

  7. Marcus Finch really annoyed me and I avoided my Reader the entire tour, and think I even used the dreaded Mark All Read button because it was just too much! I don't think I've ever gotten 600 hits on one post, so congrats! :)

  8. I think the Marcus Finch tour was the worst for me, though the Insurgent promotion stuff was pretty bad too. 600 hits is crazy! People do like their scavenger hunts.

    1. Yes those are the big examples of marketing going on too long or having the same message . Yes they do :)
